Situated south of Cincinnati, Ohio, on the I-75 corridor, Richmond and Madison County are growing at an impressive rate. Due to its easy interstate access, proximity to Lexington, lower cost of housing, good employment base, large university,and cultural and educational opportunities, population has increased from 29,080 (Richmond city limits) or 74,814 (entire county) in 2003 to 33,348 (Richmond city limits) or 83,312 (entire county) 2009.
The Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the City have ignited a unified effort along with the County, Berea, EKU, Berea College and Madison County schools to develop and execute a comprehensive Economic Development Strategic plan with the Southern Growth Policies Board. This is a multi-year plan that strives to cultivate small business, welcome new business to the area, create business and educational partnerships, and continue enhancing life offered to all our citizens. It is our intention to introduce many new opportunities to Madison County over the next five years that will result in constant and healthy growth, as well as excellent quality of life thereafter.
Some of the major employers in Richmond and Madison County, aside from the university and county schools, include the Blue Grass Army Depot, Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center, NACCO Materials Handling Group,Tokico, Guildhouse American Greeting, Enersys, Sherwin Williams, and Okonite. This diversity contributes to a well-balanced population made up of government, health and educational workers, young professionals, skilled labor, students, military and retirees.
